Around here we are always asking if someone has checked a birth/death certificate of someone, when someone has a question. Those of us that have been researching forever know that most states (with the exception of the New England states) didnt start keeping these records until between 1910-1920.

So....I made this list for you so you know pretty much when each state started http://statearchives.us/public/ ....of course some counties in states did this before it became "state law" so always double check the county you are researching in and dont take this as *gospel* but as a guideline

Thanks...that is something I am never sure of...which state, started when. I don't think a lot of newbies to genealogy realize it was so late when someone thought of keeping a record of births and deaths. It's another reason Bible records are so important. If only everyone had a family Bible and that those who have one would post the info contained in them.

Hey thanks for that info it will be most helpful. I was aware that most states didnt start keeping records till at least 1900. But I also knew that alot of counties have some records , I have gotten some records in the past through county courthouses...but thats not always helpful if you dont know what county to go looking at. Lots of good info here. thanks for putting it all together in one place. It sure makes it so much easier to know where you can go find it and if it isnt here yet just ask and someone usually has the answer!

If you are looking for Vital Records for earlier dates than Shanafaye has posted, I strongly recommend checking out the information for your particular state at:

http://statearchives.us/public/

I use it all the time to find links to each State's Vital Records information. Maybe I'm just lucky, but the states I've needed records from so far from before 1900 did provide me with ways to access the records, but I needed to know which city or county the records would be in. So don't give up if you need earlier records!

It is true the info is provided by a for-profit company, and you need to learn which links take you to free govt. info as opposed to taking you to membership data, but I've found it a very valuable beginning point without which I'd be a lot more lost and confused.

at the list of sounding redundant....thats where I got the dates to compile the list I posted and thats also why I posted to check the county you are wanting to see if they did keep records before it was state law
